Not looking for death metal but hard rock (GNR/Zepp/Sabbath). But I couldn't get any good distortion tone. So I ended up testing out the AD50VT that the guy was selling used.

I have seen the AVT50's go for around $175 plus shipping on ebay (on occasion), so patience is your best friend when shopping for gear. If they don't have the footswitch for changing channels, make 'em knock off a few bucks. (I have been thinking about building a Marshall head "box" to mount the unit in so I can use the internal speaker jack to drive a 4x12 cabinet).Īnyway, if the amp is clean (new looking) and you can try it out first to make sure everything is working, you shouldn't have any problems. I only wish my AVT100 had an external cabinet jack because I'm not sure the 12" speaker can handle all the power of this amp. It might take you a little time finding "your tone" with the AVT, but it's in there. The "hybrids" have come a long way since the days of the cold, toneless, solid state amps that I grew up with. I know there are a lot of tube amp purists out there (I have an old 50-watt all tube Ampeg combo myself) but to be honest, I can't really find much of a difference in response and tone. I also have a VOX AD30VT, so we have some similar gear. I paid just about what you are planning to spend on the 50-watt for it. I was actually shopping for the AVT50, but didn't find one at the right price and the 100-watt came along. I have a Marshall AVT100 and really like it. Are there other amps I should look at that match my needs with a budget of $500? And should I jump on this AVT50 being that it's a cheap price, rather than roll the dice and wait a few months for a similar opportunity down the road? Thanks. I do like the flexibility of amps such as the Vox Valvetronix. Is it worth taking the risk on the used AVT50? (Of course I will test it out and if it sucks that will make my decision for me.) Many people on the forum swear by Tube amps such as the Peavey Classic, but I would never be able to do a tube amp justice by cranking it up in my small apt. I thought about swapping out the pickups (I'm partial to the SD Custom Custom on my idol 66) but then I dusted off the MG15 Marshall and plugged in and got more of the GNR, hard rocking sound I'm looking for. I also have the VOX valvetronix AD15VT and I thought about upgrading that to the 30 or 50 but the stock ceramic pickups in my new LP Classic sound a little muddy on the VOX. I have the 15watt MG Marshall which has a nice tone for what it is. I'm looking for the amp to be 80% practice at low volume, 20% band practice with a drummer. However, like most places, GC does not carry the Valvestate ones anymore so I can't compare it in the store. My plan was to go to Guitar Center just to try out different amps. I have a chance to pick up a used Marshall AVT50 Valvestate in the next couple of days for $250.
